Unable to download footage from Theta Z1

I am a new 360 cam user and I am unable to get footage downloaded properly from my camera onto my Mac. The Mac acts like it doesn’t recognize that the device is connected outside of the Photos app. The photos app recognizes the camera and has options to import the footage, however when I tried to import through there, the imports ended suddenly and without explanation.

The only way I have been able to get footage downloaded has been over WiFi to my phone albeit at a snail’s pace, but then by the time I upload it to the cloud and then download onto my computer, video quality looks seriously downgraded and even though the file says it is 4K, the video quality is pixelated and looks closer to 720.

Any tips, tricks, or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

@Bar Confirming that you’re connecting to a Mac with USB-C cable. Maybe try a different cable to test?

Also, I use the Image Capture app on the Mac.

Shows a simple and clear list of files on my Z1. I just tried downloading a 4K (3840x1920) video file, 47.8MB. It transfers quickly.

Thanks for the response. I have tried several other USB cables that I use with the rest of my photo and video equipment and nothing has worked.

Image Capture was able to recognize the Z1 and it gave me the option to import the files, however once imported the file would not open either in QuickTime or Adobe Premiere. The extension is .MP4 so I’m really at a loss for what the issue could be.

@Bar

Do you have the original cable from when you bought the Z1?

The error message “unsupported compression type” is strange. I’ve never seen that.

On the Z1, you can stitch the dual fisheye on the camera or on your desktop. Honestly, I’m unsure if this is your problem. You would still be able to run the video, but it will just show the two fisheye sides.

In case it’s related if you want to try stitching: Converting 360 video
