Wondering if anybody experienced any issues when using the THETA Z1 intensively (taking 1000+ images in 3 to 4 hours). In some cases, the camera shuts down and does not start up again for some time (up to 45 min). I have a couple of the Z1 cameras and this is a recurring issue. To enhance battery life, I use a power bank continuously as well to keep it well charged.
When it shuts down, is the camera warm to the touch?
If you’re taking 1000+ images in 3 to 4 hours, is it possible to blow a fan on the body of the camera?
After it shuts down and cools down, try holding the power button down for 20 seconds.
I purchased the theta z1. After i take an image the camera shuts down. I have to be turning it on constantly. Any reason for this?
Does it turn on or turn off?
If it’s turning on, the camera will turn on when it’s plugged into a computer.
If it’s turning off, try upgrading the firmware.
Does it turn off 3 minutes after you take a picture? Or, immediately?
It turns off while taking a picture and right after taking a picture.
I have not heard of this happening before.
Are you running firmware 1.80.1?
My suggestions in order of what to try:
- upgrade the camera to the newest firmware
- upgrade the mobile app to the newest version
- restart the Z1 by holding down the power button for more than 3 seconds
- turn off battery saver, bluetooth, data on your mobile phone
- uninstall the mobile app. Reboot your phone. Reinstall the mobile app.
If everything above fails, you can try and delete all the settings of your camera.
This is more tricky. Your options
- if you have Android, you can use this internal testing app. more info
- If you can use the command line, then this tester has much more features. Information on how to reset the settings. how to install the command line app.

I just got a Z1 and this is happening to me as well. It will power down after about 8-12 pictures, or when downloading the pictures. I will try Craigs suggestions above. I have firmware 2.00.1
